About The Artwork

This perfect square provides a balanced field for the interplay of colors and textures. The base layers of rice paper gives the artwork a unique texture, a delicate subtle pattern that adds depth and complexity to the piece. The dominant colors are red, black, and white. The red is a deep, vibrant hue, bold and eye-catching, symbolizing passion and intensity. The black is stark and dramatic, providing a strong contrast to the red. Thinner black lines made with pen and ink draw the eye around the piece. The white paper as a negative space provides a moment of calm, a respite from the intensity of the red and the harshness of the black. The white also serves to highlight and frame the other colors. Finally, there are bits of yellow, turquoise and some dark purple scattered throughout the piece. The yellow is bright and cheerful, a burst of sunshine that adds warmth to the composition. The turquoise is cool and serene, a counterpoint to the yellow. Overall, this abstract piece is a study of contrasts – between colors, between shapes, between chaos and order, between warmth and coolness. It is a piece that invites viewers to interpret, to feel. The artwork is on a rigid panel that is mounted on a wooden support and includes an integral shadowbox frame painted in gloss black with a subtle crinkled effect. All mounting hardware is installed. It is signed by the artist on the reverse. A certificate of Authenticity is included.

After a long career in healthcare, I found inspiration in the works of great artists housed in renowned museums. This sparked a passion within me to pursue art education at the University of Denver, the Art Students League of Denver and other local art courses. My artistic journey over the past twenty years has been marked by a love for both abstract and representational art, demonstrating my versatility and broad range of artistic expression. I work with acrylics and oil paint, preferring small to medium sized formats. My goal involves creating images with strong underlying abstract shapes enhanced with varying values, colors, edges, and textures. Each piece requires the use of reference photographs, thumbnail sketches, and careful planning regarding what elements to include or to change to make the piece more interesting. A layered approach adds depth and complexity to my work, resulting in pieces that are as thought-provoking as they are visually appealing. I find joy in the creative process while tuning out my surroundings and immersing myself in the project at hand. I hope that the interplay of shapes, color, brushstrokes, and light will elicit an emotional response from the viewer.
