About The Artwork
For years I thought to create and print my own Christmas card. 2016 was the year. This work has been used for my Christmas card in the Christmas just passed. I guess the colours are those seen in Christmas decorations (red and green ... and some blue and yellow) but apart from that the only thing connected to Christmas is that it was created in December. I started doing line paintings after a long journey discovering abstract art. In 2008 my then figure and portrait teacher, Alan Ramsay, I had 'an amazing palette' and a frustration in drawing naked figure and portraits. He suggested I just paint colour. And so the journey to abstract painting began. When I discovered line painting I thought I was so unique. Then one day walking from the Tate Modern I came across a painting by Ian Davenport. I was exhilarated at seeing something so similar to what I'd been creating and then a little downcast at the realisation I was not so unique after all.

I am a colourist. My work explores colour balance, colour contrast and colour relationships. The results are strong vibrant works through to works that are minimalist, subtle and subdued. There are recurring themes of starkness, aloneness, isolation and otherness that reflect my lived experience. While much of my work involves acrylic on canvas and board, I embrace collage and digital painting, mixed media, watercolour and sculpture. I seek to engage with viewers, inviting exploration of the creative process, patterns and markings. Sometime the engagement entails humour. I would like viewers of my work to understand mediums and their meanings.
