About The Artwork

A unique combination of line drawings which balance color and movement through thin layers and subtle nuances to bold application of color and form, using a Wacom tablet and light pen with a computer screen as canvas. Final painting was printed using museum archival quality ink onto canvas which was stretched and framed. The one of a kind creation has an astounding sense of depth and contrast creating a three-dimensional illusion which appears to generate its own sources of light. The creative use of color and composition produces a sense of peace, at once thrilling and joyful. And, while utterly contemporary in expression, the piece manages to retain a hint of the delicate traditions of ancient Japan. Each piece engages the viewer in a rich conversation, unique to the viewer, the piece, and the moment.

Fumio Sawa has over forty-five years’ experience as an artist, working initially in Japan, followed by thirty-three years in St. Louis and Kansas City before relocating to Trinidad, Colorado. His pieces adorn the homes and offices of private collectors and institutions in four countries and ten states. Over the years, his method and medium for expression have evolved from a very traditional use of oils and watercolor depicting the beauty of nature to his current abstract vector drawings and paintings. Since 1999, Fumio has been developing his unique combinations of line drawings which balance color and movement. He spends hundreds of hours drawing and painting each piece, using a Wacom tablet and light pen as his brush and a computer screen as his canvas. His experience in water color guides his hand as he explores the limits of his new palette, ranging from thin layers and subtle nuances to bold application of color and form. Many of the pieces are created entirely by thousands of interlaced and layered lines. The result is an astounding sense of depth and contrast creating a three-dimensional illusion which appears to generate its own sources of light. Fumio draws his inspiration from the vicissitudes of nature, the exploration of space and form, and a long heritage of Japanese culture, philosophy, and art. Inspiration can come during a walk in the Colorado Mountains, or while he wanders among the historic buildings and homes in Trinidad. His work draws on the line patterns, movement of light, and changing shapes in waves and ripples of water. The dance of shadow across a single leaf or sweeping across a garden of trees and flowers may inspire a new creation. The melody and rhythm of wind, birds in flight and classical music all find their ways into his creations. These pieces fuse the complex and often contradictory interplay of emotion and logic, creating graceful imagery in infinite variations of line, shape, and color. Fumio focuses on creating a solid underlying composition which speaks of stability and tradition, while fusing the complex and often contradictory interplay of emotion and logic, through infinite variations of line, shape, color and movement to develop a progressive, cutting edge feeling to each piece of abstract art. A large format enhances the life and joy of the art, as the viewer’s eye is drawn into its depths, and dances through the multiple layers of the painting to the symphony of color, line, light, and movement.
