Heavily textured paper makes it difficult to show a very good rendition of the artwork so there is a possibility to receive a video of the artwork if interested to see it in different lighting. Print Details: Epson P20 000 Print on Hahnemühle William Turner 310g Mixed Media: Acrylic gold ink, hand pressed (by the artist) Anemone flower, satin varnish. Dimensions: (unframed) 21cm x 29.7cm Date Completed: 24 November 2023 This listing shows Edition Number: 1/5 Please Note: The placement of the gold ink and the flower will vary slightly in each edition. Please note: due to the mixed media nature of each edition, there will be unique qualities to each edition. It has been said that the Anemone flower is used to ward off evil and bad intentions. As issues surrounding women’s bodily autonomy continue to boil over globally how do we claim back ownership of our bodies, divert the male gaze and break patriarchal norms? In my work, I am exploring ideas around consent, censorship, sexuality, body and gender shaming and ageism. I find it unsettling that the basics of sexism have been normalised, and accepted by the greater part of society and I seek examples of this in history and contemporary society. Sometimes I draw influence from the stories of the bible, greek mythology and my own experience in modern culture and online forums where censorship runs ridiculously out of control. Through my connection with my models, while I photograph them, I share their own unique experiences. To shine light upon them I use flowers rich in symbolism, representing resilience, rebirth, and growth. I catch myself strategically placing the flowers, self-censoring before I even consider where I will share my work. And so both flowers and gold serve to embellish those parts of the body of which we are made to feel ashamed… The gold serves as a gift to women, nonbinary and trans, to remind us of our worth and manifest rich metaphysical abundance.

Rachel Calvo is a professional portrait photographer and mixed media artist based in Paris. Born in 1975 in Australia, Rachel grew up on the southern beaches of Sydney. Her globe-trotting parents instilled a desire to travel and explore the world. This encouraged her to travel to London in 1999 and finally France, where she now resides with her family. Her mixed media studies are a blend of photography, gold leaf, gold inks and dried flowers; many of which she collects and preserves herself. She uses this medium to showcase issues for women that are often internalised, though which exist for each one of us. She hopes to encourage a wider discussion around the topics of ageism, body image, sexuality and self-love.
