About The Artwork

Dis-ease plays with the double meaning of this word not only as illness but also as discomfort. In this work the source of discomfort appears to be the overtly feminine theme - pink, lace, and embroidery
stitching ,done rather crudely. It reminds me of the 18th and 19th century diagnosis of hysteria in women that explained away any behaviours that made men uncomfortable or was seen as unacceptable.

I am a painter living outside of Franschhoek, Cape Town with my sculptor husband and 2 children. My work has always been consumed with the female body and the stories and histories carried in this body. I live in an area where the trauma of our violent history can be seen in the women I encounter every day. I do not claim to be their voice - I only wish to acknowledge them and affirm that I see them.
