Diurnal Heartbeat: Shanghai, 01 is the first Hybrid VR Painting documenting dawn and dusk at Shanghai’s Bund. Hybrid VR Paintings are physical paintings that may be enjoyed as AR/VR experiences. The painting can be experienced as a 360° panoramic experience on cellular devices, touchscreen monitors, Smart TVs, Google Cardboard, and other devices. Diurnal Heartbeat: Shanghai explores the architecture of shanghai’s Bund (Pudong and Puxi) during sunrise and sunset. Architectural monuments provide a spatial continuity from painting to painting—an exhibition space reimagined as a living map, a cartographic environment—within which the paintings pulse back and forth echoing the heartbeat rhythm of dawn and dusk, life pulsing in the city, connecting individual lives with the earth’s diurnal rotation. 360° panoramic VR paintings communicate the transitions of time while placing the viewer/participant in a rotating context that metaphorically mirrors the earth’s revolution. This painting captures the sunrise from the Puxi side of the Huangpu River. The view is in front of the Shanghai Custom House (clock tower). I painted this in Suzhou, Jiangsu, China during the COVID-19 quarantine.
