About The Artwork

Based on by Vincent Van Gogh’s “Self-Portrait (Dedicated to Paul Gauguin) (1888)” and “Bleaching Ground at Scheveningen (1882)”. Original from the J. Paul Getty Museum. In this portrait Van Gogh’s struggle with self is explored. He is torn by different personas confronting each other leaving him in a daze. Colour is drained from the central image so that the large figures appear more dominant and almost intimidating forms of self. I wanted to mix old with new styles by layering portions of the artists’ works with modern digital photography and worked with colour to achieve a surreal yet contemporary feel that pays homage to the original works whilst still feeling modern and edgy. The artwork was created as part of the Saatchi Art "The Other Avatars" NFT project. Marrying old with new creative forms I tried to understand as much as possible about what we now believe to have held meaning for the artist, what fed…To do this I isolated myself for 3 weeks during the early stage of the creative process in order to truly inhabit another world and tried to interpret the work in a manner that visually appealed to my aesthetic whilst still doing justice to the original style. Throughout this project I felt a distinct pull towards making each avatar a complete original with little bearing to each other…In this way each character has his own story. For the creative process, portraits were used as a base and digitally manipulated into the different personas. I digitally layered different photographs, sketches and experimental pieces from the studio on a blank canvas. Many were Images of the the ocean, the sky and also of fire captured in slow motion. This was completed in Photoshop in order to combine the various elements into a unique digital file. Throughout the process there was a conscious intention to attempt to incorporate the artists’ original style or source of inspiration: Bold contour lines, prominent diagonals, a high or absent horizon, a unique way or representing space with emphasis on foreground and background and giving prominence to the natural world. Maya Almeida Araujo has exhibited globally and had sites structurally adapted for her pieces. She is a multidisciplinary visual artist whose practice considers art as a platform for connection. With a focus on the element of water, the work floats between the spheres of still and moving images, artistic installation, and site specific work. Navigating the confluence of nature, art and technology, her work has developed through critical engagement with her own mind and body in a way that examines fundamental questions of how human beings relate to themselves and to their environment. Adopting a unique approach to each work, Maya draws on personal experience, culture and ancient philosophy to create visceral immersive experiences. An invitation to step into an imaginary world in a way that is both sensorial and profoundly intimate. It asks how we can come together and ultimately, heal. London is home but Maya was born in Lisbon to Portuguese/Belgian/German parents. She studied Biology at Imperial College, London. Her artistic path was one of auto-didacticism with training at Central Saint Martins, with best in class equipment manufacturers and under some of the greatest image makers such as Tim Flach and Lois Greenfield. The work consistently pushes technological boundaries in search for a truer realisation of the intended experience. Recent projects have involved developing custom rigs for film-making in the open ocean, multi-screen editing at ground breaking levels of resolution, colour depth, motion, interactive animation environments and producing hyper-textured ambisonic soundscapes. All in partnership with a collective of like-minded artistic collaborators and craftspeople without losing sight of her truth.
