Edgar Allen Gogh - Limited Edition of 1 Artwork

Based on"Self-portrait (1888)" and “Road in Etten (1881) by Vincent Van Gogh. Original from the MET Museum. For this portrait I sought a soft, humorous feel to contrast with both Van Gogh and Edgar Allen Poe’s styles. I mixed old with new media by layering portions of the original paintings with photographs and worked with colour blends to achieve a light modern feel to a design that also pays homage to the originals works. I want the viewer to feel a sense of surrealism so used the outline of a bird as a negative and paired impressionist visuals with a modern suit and contemporary aluminium & plexiglass frame, The artwork was created as part of the Saatchi Art "The Other Avatars" NFT project. The project was a huge divergence for me, but this drove me to creatively explore in new and very exciting ways. I tried to marry old with new and understand as much as possible about what we believe to have held meaning for the artist, what fed and drove him…To do this I isolated myself for 3 weeks during the early stage of the creative process in order to truly inhabit another world. Throughout this project I felt a distinct pull towards making each avatar a complete original with little bearing to each other.. Much of Van Gogh s work demonstrate a reverence for nature. It is more idealist than realistic. I tried to make this come across in my pieces whilst at once attempting stylistically to marry traditional with contemporary art. For the creative process, portraits were used as a base and digitally manipulated into the different personas. I digitally layered different photographs, sketches and experimental pieces from the studio on a blank canvas. Many were Images of the the ocean, the sky and also of fire captured in slow motion. This was completed in Photoshop in order to combine the various elements into a unique digital file. Throughout the process there was a conscious intention to attempt to incorporate the artists’ original style or source of inspiration: Bold contour lines, prominent diagonals, a high or absent horizon, a unique way or representing space with emphasis on foreground and background and giving prominence to the natural world.
