Covid has forced many people to change their approach to creative expression. Unless they worked in a studio, photographers "traditionally" went out into the world to create images. Quarantine has forced that artistic exploration to be different and turned that search inward. I have experimented with image creation by combining the shapes, textures and colors of the fruits, vegetables, flowers and other products at my local grocery stores with the digital darkroom softwares on my mobile devices. The Equivalents series was named in homage to the “inventor” of the style, photographer Alfred Stieglitz, whose original black and whites were created to evoke a mood or feeling. Each Equivalent starts as a traditional photograph. The image then goes through multiple creative and technical process steps and uses many different digital imaging programs. All of the work is done on either an iPad or iPhone.

If this bio is going to be your determining factor for purchase rather than, "I like this image and want it to hang on my wall", please rethink your thinking. Some people knit. Other's play video games. Some (inexplicably) binge watch cats on YouTube. I make Equivalents on my mobile devices. Period. No deep philosophical underpinnings, just a fun, relaxing, ever-present creative process that can be done in a hazmat suit, under lock-down. No muss. No fuss. Bottom line, this isn't art to take too seriously; just look at and enjoy. Nevertheless, here goes. . . Raised by wolves, Budly was colicky from the get go. When his howling became too much even for the pack, he was left on the side of the road where a veterinary acupuncturist and his braille proofreading wife took pity on the sorry sot and raised him to be the cantankerous, curmudgeonly, Medusa-haired youth his educators came to know and abhor. After a tumultuous kindergarten where he walked 6 miles to school each way - uphill - without shoes or lunch (to build character), Budly grew to be a legend in his own mind and developed an aversion to public parking lots, beets, stadium events and activities requiring small rapidly moving projectiles.
