These wooden wall sculptures of the ocean are largely inspired by traditional themes of the ocean through modern technology, breathing new life into an old form. On at the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts until Jan 13th. While the virtual reality isn’t up there’s a video display showing my process. Created by computer software that allows for complex mathematical algorithms with patterns based in statistical models of deep ocean waves, not possible to form by hand given natures intricacies, but possible with the advent of the computer married with mathematics.

Belinda Griffiths is a visual artist whose practice explores a hybrid of traditional themes through modern day technologies. An artist who has a love for water, clouds and natural phenomena, who infuses the organic complexity of nature with digital technology. She works across a broad range of media including painting, digital art, photography and sculpture. Recurrent themes include, reality in the digital age and it's effect on our lives with it's ability to augment memories. She studied digital illustration and graphic design, successfully working in the film industry for some 8 years and has extended those disciplines into her practice. Belinda's current body of work, Etched by the Wind is exploring the face of the ocean, etched by the wind, it's patterns and muted tones carved into wood. An organic, swirling dramatic ocean that binds us to the land. These intimate sized wall pieces, in subtle and naturalistic colors, are a time-snap of the ocean that evoke memories of the seaside and the colossal unharnessed power of nature. A new technology has been developed to bring these unique works. A full-time practicing artist at Bayview Studios, Shelly Bay. Her works are held in private collections in New Zealand, Australia, France and the USA.
