I love animals and my entire life has involved their study or working with them. I once worked in fundraising for elephants to help reduce conflict with humans. They are noble creatures who have incredible intelligence and are clearly sentient in every way that makes us believe we are human. They display emotion and anger and love and empathy. They are magnificent in scale and dangerous if angered but always awe inspiring and worthy of our respect. Despite this elephants have not had an easy relationship with humans. For as long as human history has been recorded they have been used in battle, construction and entertainment. Today they are at threat from our expansion of space, pollution and environmental change. They come into conflict with farmers and are poached for their precious ivory. I hope this painting comes close to a fitting portrait for this beautiful animal. It's composition hints at it bursting through the long grass, the red sky a sunset? Or a wildfire? I have used metal nails, carefully blunted, primed and painted ivory as the tusks, prominent in the painting as they are in the elephants story and possibly their fate. Lastly if one day they no longer roam the earth this is my contribution to preserving their memory. I also pledge to donate £20 from the sale of this work to the elephants and bees project. https://elephantsandbees.com/ Elephants are naturally scared of the African honey bee, the project aims to create Barriers between farming areas and elephant territory using bee hives to reduce conflict. This helps protect important crops and elephant lives whilst encouraging pollination.

United Kingdom
Artist from Yorkshire UK with a love for travelling and animals and the natural world. I am a cynic and thoroughly disillusioned with the world we live in but find joy in nature and creativity. I consider myself a left wing humanist and I am interested in art as a means of protest particularly against capitalism and the destruction of our planet. I am very inspired by my time in Australia and New Zealand and like to show respect to other cultures in my work. My style is varied. I love abstract works and like to experiment with texture but animals also feature heavily in my work.
