Neighborhoods transform into hollow streets and avenues and repetitive rows of VACANT spaces - can repetition be an intentional step to normalize VACANCY and its aftereffects? Life energy and unique expressions of neighborhood culture transform into sterile, homogeneous, cookie-cutter glass boutiques. Fabric shop's embedded design conveys lingering energy of what was -displacement is new and there are scraps of material still in the empty space. While the glass boutiques framing the VACANT fabric shop are occupied, they are empty and vapid displays of consumption. The VACANT series displays spaces and places that are disappearing via gentrification. When history is systematically and systemically destroyed and places are erased, there is an emptiness that swells in space. What once was echoes in the background, in a separate dimension. If you slipped through a portal, the stories, history, and culture might still be there or found living in the hearts and memories of primary relics. Vacant lots, shops, and space throughout the Garment District and along 6th, 7th, 8th, and 9th Avenues are an eerie representation of erasure and rebuilding to create a facade of (sub)urbanism and so-called development. Instead what's erased is on display.
