About The Artwork

This work came about in an interplay with the weaving machine. It is derived from a handmade pencil drawing, which the machine has interpreted and translated to a refined jaquard woven tapestry. It came about from the idea how people can have such hopeful expectations of technology, that it almost becomes religious or transcendental: people hoping to be uploaded and saved forever, the Cloud being like a Heaven. The image plays with depth: the large shape is like an island in a dark blue sea of lines, yet at the same time appears to be an opening in the dark blue layer, leading towards a second stream of light behind it, full of promise. Gliding repetitions of lines and colours evoke an almost music-like, joyful effect. Some shapes remind of pixels. They are hand-drawn. Yet through the weaving process, there also appears a digital pixel-like effect, and the image includes a repetition of shapes that came about while weaving on the machine. The work is a mixture of human and machine gestures. The work is mounted on a wooden panel. At the back there is a subtle hook for installing it on the wall.

Marisa Rappard (1979) is a Dutch drawing artist. She creates works on paper and also lets the dense stream of lines emerge from the drawing and enter the room in installations. Though the pencil has been her favourite material ever since she incessantly drew comics in her childhood lately she is also venturing to use ink and acrylics, making large scale drawings on paper as well as working directy onto the wall.
