About The Artwork

For many hundreds of years the world vision of Belarusians was defined by pagan cults. Cult of family, sun and nature forces. This work shows the transformation of the authentic values. The scull is decorated with a traditional pattern of Jaryla – a god of sun, spring and sensual love. This is an opposition of a sunlight and a shine of rhinestones as contradiction of authentic aspiration to transcendent values and modern tendencies, such as cult of consummation. Scull - is an authentic defending symbol: people used to hang it on entrances as a protection from evil force. Here it is used as a reference to the question, how can we keep and save the memory about our ethnic roots? Which form the ethnic ideas should take so as not to be lost and stay actual? How not to loose its initial sense and value? Where is this balance?

Artist ( Юлия Потоцкая ) with Belorussian origins, living and creating in France. In my works I try not to put pressure on the viewer with obvious icons, because I want to wake up in a human his own contradictory, ambiguous thoughts and feelings. I do not impose ideas - I'm hinting towards the possibilities of perception. Apart of schools, coarses, practice in art and design, I have obtained two master degree in Computer Science and Applicational Mathematics. It helps me to look at the fine arts as a researcher. My methods evolve from the techniques of composition and colour to experiments with whole concepts. My goal is to awaken the conflicting feelings of the viewer, to encourage the viewer to ask questions when he see my picture and to try to catch the author's motivation.
