ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This work is from the encaustic line series- Inside Her Mind. The works are unframed on a deep natural wood panel and have hanging hardware. Though each work is very abstract, they are based on mental/ emotional health and the ability to express thoughts and feelings without fear. I constantly work on being ok with letting my voice be heard. The subject matter of these works was what I thought my inner dialog or thoughts might look like in an abstract linear representation. The process of creating of these works was particularly important incorporating both an additive method in which the medium lent itself to a covering or burying kind of action synonymous with my thoughts being kept inside and then subtractive or stripping away and uncovering- as a form of then baring my emotions. Though the idea behind them may be deep, the works themselves are playful and bold and joyful.

Birdy Harrison is a painter currently located in Los Angeles who has been fascinated by art and art processes her whole life. She had the good fortune to take traditional art classes as a child and then majored in studio art in college. However the knowledge gained from classical approaches, standard art making techniques and realism left her unsatisfied. She turned to experimenting and problem solving on her own with alternative materials and her work has taken an abstract turn. She earned her MA in education so that she could share all of her learning and enthusiasm through teaching art in public schools, art centers and galleries. Having lived in the countryside of Connecticut, metropolises of New York and Los Angeles, and the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, she has always been attracted to both cities and nature. Her art may start out with something realistic from life, but then she brings something new and emotional to the work making it abstract, focusing more on the elements of art themselves such as color, line, shape and texture. Her work has been exhibited and collected nationally.
