Landscape in Stone Artwork

This piece is an early textural study. I was fascinated at he time by rock collection and studying nature in minute detail. I noticed some sandstone from India had beautiful swirling colours through the rock and in my minds eye it looked like the streaks formed a landscape. This piece set out to recreate that. Using glue and sand and small pebbles and concrete powder I attempted to create the texture of the sandstone. Which was then painted with shades of tan and blue and grey and impregnated with streaks of pearlescent paint. The effect of this is to allow the painting to look remarkably different according to the lighting on the piece. When I look at the work I see a windswept rugged coastline like that in North Wales however it is an extremely subjective piece and others pick out very different landscapes from the work. This piece helped pave the way for my later works around texture.
