Giclée Print: Signed Limited Edition of 50 It's the 21st century and surely we should be free to love whoever we want to love. A true Statue of Liberty is a fantastic notion particularly when statues of repression are being torn down around the world. In Ralf’s words “It's a statement about equality and ‘liberating love’. This piece is based in hope and optimism. There are numerous symbolic references, some obvious, some ambiguous, some personal." The outrageous juxtaposition of Jaques-Louis David’s classical characters from 1772 with Lady Liberty (If she is actually a she) bring a complex melodrama, a wry humour to a once desperate scene. The art is a complex montage, much inspired by life in 2020, an intentional melange of icons, cultures, pop, and art. Ralf explains: “In this depiction a stage play comes to life, the flirtatious Niobe, is saying ’no’ to a rose of love, but clearly without sincerity, possibly quite enamoured with the naked figure. Meanwhile surrounded by the cast of preoccupied actors, as in life. A set of jacks (a centuries old game) that you’ll also find referenced or hidden in all Ralf’s work…symbolises ‘play’ which is what art means to Ralf, pure play. And of course Ralf himself, the Cairn Terrier is hidden in every artwork. the quality of the Giclée print is exceptional, the inks and detail are delicious. and the format at 60 x 80cm is bold and quite a statement.
