About The Artwork

This work started out as a drawing of a found image - a nude model, professionally lit, standing in front of a villa set in wild grassland, the steppes, savanna or plains somewhere, and screaming, or acting as if she is. The image has disappeared from the internet, but I made a drawing. I was drawn to the pathos of the scream, as I was interested in the nude, but not the superficial nudes beloved of decorative art, I was searching for something that lay beyond the surface, something transcendent... something in the body that might lead me to truth... while I did the drawing, and later, a painting from the drawing, I realised it was a drawing of my feminine self longing to be free, so I called the drawing "My inner woman"... then I saw the grasslands as the African bush where I grew up, and where so many Europeans became the victims of their dreams of freedom, which they as expressed through conquest and colonial farms, which became golden cages, prisons from which they could not escape. It reminded me of the white farmers trapped in Zimbabwe's civil war, and Doris Lessing's book, so I called the painting after the book: "Story of an African Farm". This version is a trick of the light, captured with an iPhone. A room light is reflected from the glass, and I have artfully inserted a model of the statue of liberty, so its silhouette is captured in the photography. Adjusted only a little in photoshop, and printed onto a canvas, mounted on a stretcher frame, and now we have "Liberty" a meditation on the impossibility of real freedom in the mind of the materialist.

I use creativity to explore my identity, to interpret and meditate on mind, body, nature, the world. I paint and draw and write and sometimes combine all three in digital mediums. Some of my recent work reflects the social and political reality. I've been drawing from life in pastels, pencils and charcoal since my teens. I've been painting since 2007, and have been involved in artists groups in Manchester, Zimbabwe and Brighton. I'm a Dad and I live in Brighton. My parents were both artists.
