About The Artwork

“Art does not reproduce the visible; rather, it makes visible,” -Kandinsky One of a series of exploratory paintings of semi-abstract landscapes. I am increasingly looking inward, rather than outward to the material world, indulging my inner muse by seeking refuge in forms of expression that jettison recognizable content- concentrating on color, texture and form to offer a deeply felt experience. I like the play of contrasts: light and shadow, textures and color areas that lead the viewer on a journey. I sometimes start with a vague idea or emotion but, often the idea changes as the work evolves. As the work progresses, the piece takes over control and the finished idea arrives at my doorstep. I am compelled to deliberately deconstruct my approach with more minimalist iterations until I find the strongest and most honest expression of the idea. While I think the idea or concept is important, I willingly embrace a change in concept: a serendipitous color mix or unexpected brush stroke because I enjoy a journey that offers discoveries. Experimentation and discovery have been the pattern of my life, for better or worse. The final Limited Edition piece I create utilizes museum/archival quality ink and paper. The acid-free paper and Giclee printing will yield an excellent copy of the original that will remain color-true for 100 years or more. A white margin is left around the piece (the painted image) for help with matting and framing. I am also providing a very nicely laid out Certificate of Authenticity that includes details of the context of creation, medium and materials used.

Largely a self-taught artist, Bryan started painting and drawing at a very young age working primarily in watercolor. He started painting with more commitment in 1985 while living in Cambridge, Mass. Artistic statement. Exploration, personal reflection and discovery are what I seek in in all things I enjoy, including art. I want the art I create to provoke, move, or disrupt the viewer- to transport them, at least momentarily, to a new or perhaps forgotten and deeply felt place. To know this is to know me. It’s well understood that the human brain is a complex and powerful pattern recognition organ relentlessly striving to find balance between order and chaos. This tendency toward recognition partially explains why we see faces in clouds or the Madonna in a piece of toast. Realist art is satisfying because “getting” an artwork brings a momentary feeling of victory. In contrast, abstract art confronts the viewer. The art raises the questions instead of the other way around. There is a mystery to abstract art that encourages a long arc of exploration, personal reflection and discovery. I am increasingly looking inward, rather than outward to the material world, for artistic inspiration- indulging my inner muse by seeking refuge in forms of expression that deliberately jettison recognizable content- concentrating on color, texture and form to offer a deeply felt experience. I sometimes start with a vague idea and emotion but, often the idea changes as the work evolves. Some of my more satisfying pieces were created when I relinquish conscious control of the inspirational idea and let the developing piece guide my next steps.
