About The Artwork

“ Mayahuel, the Aztec goddess of the maguey plant ” Codex Laud, sheet 16, orange. Digitally enhanced on light gray, brown, orange, deep blue, dark gray and black backgrounds by MM in 2023. Uploaded September 14 2023. This image replaces the one of Mayahuel I presented digitally in 2021 with double contours. When illustrating the ancient Mexican worldview I strive to enhance its beauty and visibility and want to reproduce the pictograms as close as possible to the ancient originals. I replace my first illustration with this one, which is more attractive and truer to the pre-Columbian original. Mayahuel is represented as a beautiful, blue maiden peeking out of a maguey stalk. The maguey or agave is the source of mezcal, tequila and pulque, alcoholic beverages given by the gods to humanity to be happy, to chant and sing. Seduced by Ehécatl Quetzalcóatl she descended from heaven and made love to him. For this offense she was killed and out of her remains grew the first agave plant. As a goddess of fertility she is associated with Tlazoltéotl, Xochiquetzal and Cihuacóatl. The 50 cm print comes in a limited edition of 9. Title, ancient codex, author and year of creation are included on the print as shown. The print comes with a 1 cm white border. Made to order on archival cotton paper in 10 days plus shipping. For open edition inkjet prints in custom size please contact mario.mutschlechner@gmail.com

Shipping & Returns

Delivery Time:Typically 5-7 business days for domestic shipments, 10-14 business days for international shipments.

As an industrial photographer from Cologne, Germany, based since 1967 in Mexico City, I used my craft for decades to document scenes and subjects in sharp, detailed and well lit images. Back in the seventies, when simulating views of other planets, I was looking for a different perception of reality and found it with infrared color film. Today I enjoy a creative freedom similar to that of a painter. With the right combination of photograph and digital manipulation I can create images that are a tribute to imagination and beauty. Starting in 2019 I present on Saatchiart 15 collections as a synopsis of my photography, some digitally remastered and others digitally modified, for sale as archival inkjet prints in different sizes.
