In greek Mythology, the Siren was a creature of beauty that would use their song to lure men to their deaths. In todays society, the vehicles of social media and print ads with the aid of photoshop and airbrushing has convinced people of various generations to desire something that is not real. This push for the ideal physical form has lead many down the road of eating disorders, drug use, body dysmorphia and shaming, ultimately leading to depression and in some cases death. Much like the Sirens of Mythology, this driving force is destroying the lives of young men and women. Tartarus is said to be a hellish labyrinth. The cloud background is in itself a maze but also designed to replicate the tissue of the human brain. For it is the prison of the mind that so many people fall victim and remain trapped. I created this work of art as a statement to the very challenges I have faced and fallen victim to at the hand of society and those who drive and control it. Using thousands of hand painted push pins, strategically placed in the Benday dot formation, this work of art is a 3 dimensional piece. The layering of colors allows the image to change its tone and contrast as it is viewed from various angles.

My name is Matthew Adamczyk, I am a self taught artist residing in Chicago. Prior to establishing my career as a painter I was a Principle Ballet Dancer. Having a profound love and a natural curiosity for all aspects of art, I am exploring many ideas as to what art can be through painting. My career dancing and performing on stage has triggered a sense of depth, light and shadow, perception and layers in art. My paintings focus on multiple layers of color to create a mix of tone, contrast and depth that constantly change as the art is viewed from different angles. I achieve this by hand painting thousands of push pins and plotting them on a Ben Day dot grid to establish the subject matter. The background area is painted but left without the presence of pins to create additional depth. Inspired by the Pop and Graphic artists before me I try and keep each piece bright, whimsical, and full of life and energy.
