The phrase means “the pathos of things” or “an empathy toward things” and evokes the idea that the value we hold in these monetary objects is transient and ephemeral. Formed from origami money (roubles, it happens), they become objects of beauty rather than objects of exchange. Their value is in their valueless-ness. Their value is in their ever-changing effect in the minds eye rather than in anything fixed or meaningful.
