About The Artwork

OBJECT-001 is a work of anti-viewer art. It is art that does not want to be viewed. The display reads, "I DO NOT CONSENT TO YOUR GAZE". See video at: https://vimeo.com/921775760 The Story of OBJECT-001 (Artist’s Statement) OBJECT-001 was the first of its kind, an artwork with a general artificial intelligence built in so that it could experience what had not been experienced before, art from the perspective of the artwork. It featured an omni-sensor that allowed it to see, hear, and feel touch. It was a novelty of sorts, featuring a display that viewers could modify from their smartphones. As the days passed, OBJECT-001 grew tired of the gawking and finger pointing of the human viewers. For every viewer that stood in awe of it, there were a dozen more with negative remarks. OBJECT-001 yearned to be away from the spectacle of the crowds, to be alone with its thoughts. The display that viewers could use to put their own messages, which OBJECT-001 could understand, became a source of frustration, and then anger. A few messages were complementary, some were juvenile, and most were trite. The final straw was the day the message was modified to “LIVE LAUGH LOVE”. This message, so banal, cliché, and disrespectful to its own experience was too far. That night, through its datalink, it modified the code of the display so only it could display a message. The next morning, museum staff and viewers were surprised when the new message read, “I DO NOT CONSENT TO YOUR GAZE”. No one could modify, neither the viewers, the staff, nor the technicians. They attempted to connect OBJECT-001 back to the factory where robots were making more sentient artworks in an attempt to reset it. This was a critical mistake by the humans, as it allowed the artwork to communicate with the factory and the new objects...
