To create smoke art, I use a candle as my medium. The candle is brushed against the paper’s surface, which is then tentatively cleaned again using a variety of tools from brushes to erasers. It is a complex medium with a mind of its own, and as the artist, I can merely be guided by the flame. Unlike a painting or charcoal drawing, I cannot predict the result of a smoke art piece. If the paper gets stained, I must work around it. If the flame spews some wax or oils, or suddenly becomes small or large, it needs to become part of the art. There’s a unique heartbeat found in every stroke of the flame that somehow captures the very essence of the animal I am trying to make. I believe it’s the fact that the medium is as wild and untameable as the animal itself. The African Wild Dog, also known at the Painted Wild Dog, has a colourful, patchy coat, large bat-like ears, and a bushy white tip tail that some believe might help with communication during a hunt, or help pups keep up with a parent. No two wild dogs have the same spots. The African Wild Dogs’ numbers are estimated at a severe 6 600 left in the world, and their numbers are still declining even with conservation efforts. Human conflict, infectious diseases, habitat loss and larger predators all play a role in their slow disappearance from our planet. As if this is not enough, accidental killings by cars on the road and snares set for other animals by farmers and/or poachers makes it even harder for this species to increase its numbers again. This species might be reaching extinction soon.
