About The Artwork

This painting was inspired by 300 year old, hand-written documents on vellum that were given to me by a friend in Edinburgh, Scotland. They had been rescued from the flooded basement of an ancient government building. Some of the vellum pages were in small fragments and were remarkably intriguing. My intention was to create a sense of time passing forward to the present. Hence the collage and contemporary letters. This painting is created with countless layers of acrylic paint and mixed media. The underlying collage grid is composed of 300 year old vellum documents circa 1704. The textured surface is rich with underlying colors that make you want to touch, which is ok Professional grade acrylics and archival mixed media. Varnished with professional U/V coating to protect the surface. This painting is part of the 'Exploring Space' series ARTIST STATEMENT. ‘Exploring Space’ Original Paintings Series Like most people, I used the extra time during the pandemic lockdowns to sort through stuff at home and at the studio. As a result, both in my life and in my art, I became interested in the organization of space. These observations inspired this series of paintings. My usual preference is to approach my work from an organic viewpoint. However, I do enjoy using an underlying grid as a compositional framework on occasion. It was exciting to experiment with this series and see what would emerge. To create visual complexity, I used multiple layers of collage and paint that are added and subtracted over time. The resulting surface is like looking for buried treasure. They are an organic excavation of the process.

"Transcending Nature with Tactile Layers of Color & Texture" Shirley Williams is a Canadian artist living and working near the US border, best known for her abstract paintings focused on layered color and tactile texture. Color and texture convey emotion at a subconscious level. Williams' paintings combines these two elements to evoke associations with the energy of landscape and nature. Nature alters our consciousness and lift our spirits. In the same way that being in nature energizes us, Williams' intention is to express this subtle energy boost through paint. Shirley Williams grew up moving often across Canada and Europe, inspired by art in every city. She worked in Toronto for many years as a documentary film producer until 1991 when she began painting full time. Her paintings have been exhibited and collected widely in both Canada and the US.
