About The Artwork

The art work itself was inspired by Dan Cruickshank’s BBC documentary ‘The Bridges that Built London’. In the programme he mentioned how many small sculptures of Hindu deities were being found on the river bed of the Thames and also being washed up on the banks. The holy river Ganga in India, being substituted by the Thames for Hindus in London. It was such a beautiful little anecdote, but inspired the artist on the quest to make these 'maps'. Playfully wondering what a map of the Thames would look like if you were to provide locations to make personal offerings to various deities etc. Thinking of how tens of millions could line the banks of the Thames all at once, in a similar manner to how the actual Ganges is lined by people once every decade. The markings on the edges of the river are actually cut from an original hand drawing of the suspension rod calculations for the Albert Bridge.
