About The Artwork

Acts of violence against children are the most difficult to understand and accept and have become prevalent in our world. I created this work in honor of all children who have had their lives taken from them too early. This piece especially focuses on the senseless death of one little girl, Melissa Ortega, who had recently emigrated to the United States from Mexico alongside her mother. In January 2022, eight-year-old Melissa was caught in gang crossfire and killed in the Pilsen neighborhood of Chicago. After visiting Melissa’s street memorial, I felt compelled to create this work, which includes images of her shrine. My piece, Saint Philomena for the Innocent, takes inspiration from the virgin martyr who died when she was just 13 years old. St. Philomena is the patron saint of babies, children and youth. Note: This piece has an actual hand made wood anchor pendant attached. © 2024 Laurie Buman. All rights reserved.

I am a Chicago-based artist best known for mixed media pieces that often combine digital technology with traditional mediums such as: pastel, acrylic, wax, gold leaf and photography. The work is rooted in my personal search for the sacred and divine that is frequently found in the indigenous cultures and rituals of Mexico. My approach is to create pieces layered with meaning beyond the obvious. Every component and image within each work has its own unique history. I purposefully combine them to tell a greater story that transcends the physical and touches the spiritual. This body of work is my way of bringing light into the darkness. It is inspired by long-held beliefs of Mexican culture, most notably from Catholicism, and the selfless legacy of saints. Through these pieces, I humbly attempt to reflect upon social issues that affect the most vulnerable among us today.
