ABOUT THE ARTWORK

About the Artwork Mixed media landscape quilt, easy to hang from the rod sleeves Materials: Cotton, cotton batting, thread, wool embroidery thread Searching for sea glass on the beaches of the world has long been a favorite pastime of mine and my husband. It led to the idea for this piece, starting another hunt for a design I liked and the materials to bring it to life. Choosing the fabrics for the sea glass was an important step in a creative process that became very Zen-like for me. I used fabrics left over from other projects, only buying a few new lengths to supplement. Cutting the pieces, looking at my trove of real sea glass to make sure the shapes were right, while playfully capturing some images in the fabrics. Deciding on the placement of the pieces was the next step. The neutral area between the greens and blues was a deliberate choice, softening what would otherwise be an intense saturation of colors. The flow of colors and the organic “sea glass” shapes give the viewer a sense of serenity. You can almost hear the susurration of the water over the glass as a wave washes over the shore, revealing the bits of treasure! This piece is free-motion quilted around each piece of sea glass, adding depth and texture to the work. The white background accentuates the colors, allowing the eye to absorb and enjoy the interplay of the shapes.

I started doing needlework at a young age. I moved from one technique to another, branching out into other forms of creative artistry. I grew up in the Adirondack Mountains of northern New York State, surrounded by an abundance of natural beauty, colors and forms. There was a communal mindset of conservation, preservation, and protection, creating a burgeoning ecological awareness in all who lived there. I now live in Florida, where the landscape is different, but the need to preserve and protect remain just as, or even more, relevant. Travelling the world, experiencing different cultures and environments, I take inspiration from where I have been and the feelings these places evoke. I use remnants or recycled textiles and media whenever possible in my work. It connects me to the places I have been and the life I wish others would live. The creative process is multi-level for me. When I get an idea for a piece, I cannot rest until I have gathered my materials and mapped out a design. The first attempts are not always successful, but I continue with the ideas until I find the right textiles and media for their expression. Then the process becomes more of a joyful journey, fitting and re-fitting the pieces, changing color combinations, until no further adjustments are needed. A sense of peace and rightness prevails as the work gets closer to completion.
