About The Artwork

What inspired my work? We are currently in the “Ocean Decade” which runs to the year 2030. This is a global initiative which was formulated to create awareness of the preservation of ocean mammals and their natural habitat. To put this into context by the time you finish reading this, 1141 sharks would have been slaughtered around the world. That’s 11,417 every hour which translates to 274,000 every single day. Simply put, we are on the verge of eradicating one of the most important predators in the ocean system. The ocean predators keep other predatory species in check ensuring a balanced marine ecosystem. In response to the urgent need for the preservation of ocean mammals, Jan Menzel, a dedicated conservationist and the only South African to introduce this artistic medium, supports this initiative. X-Ray art is by its essence a conservation project that utilizes X-Ray as an artistic medium to create awareness about endangered wildlife. What do I hope my viewers will feel? I hope my viewers will feel empathy and develop an understanding of the beauty and importance of ocean mammals and the respective roles they have to play in the ecosystem. Why do I choose this medium? X-rays are conventionally used to examine the living. When used as an art form, X-rays breathe life back into a species on the edge of survival. These X-rays by their nature are associated with life and by association are now “living” too – each with their individualistic imprint.

Jan Menzel is a multifaceted artist whose journey spans several continents and a myriad of creative disciplines. Born in Germany and raised in South Africa, Jan currently calls the vibrant town of Stellenbosch home. His early experiences across two diverse cultural landscapes instilled in him a profound appreciation for nature and its preservation. After an enriching period abroad, Jan established a commercial photographic studio with a focus on automotive photography, quickly gaining recognition for his sharp, dynamic imagery. However, it was his expeditions to some of the world's most isolated natural habitats that deepened his commitment to environmental issues. These adventures not only influenced his personal convictions but also shaped his artistic direction. Today, Jan is best known for his innovative use of X-ray imaging in art, a technique he employs to striking effect in his latest project, SHARK X. This initiative, in collaboration with his son, Dylan Boerstra, aims to shed light on the plight of endangered ocean mammals and wildlife, presenting these creatures in a vulnerable, almost ethereal form to provoke thought and foster conservation efforts. An ardent supporter of wildlife conservation, Jan actively participates in the Rhino Conservation drive and uses his art to influence and educate. His work invites viewers to see beyond the surface, encouraging a deeper connection with the natural world and its inhabitants. Through his unique lens, Jan Menzel continues to be a powerful voice in both the art world and environmental advocacy, bridging the gap between artistic expression and ecological activism. "The X-rays of the ocean mammals breathes existence into each art piece. X-rays are associated with life, as they are used to examine the living and for this purpose, the images are now living too. Each with their own individualistic imprint." — Danielle Alasca Olivier
