Shurijo - the historic palace of the Ryukyu kings. Shuri, today apart of Naha, is the traditional capitol of the Ryukyu Kingdom. Ryukyu, an independent nation until 1879, is a Pacific Island society, with cultural elements from China, Southeast Asia, Japan, and Korea, that have been adapted and modified by native Ryukyuans over the course of thousands of years. The result is a unique culture unlike that of anywhere else in the world. Today, due to over a century of foreign colonization, Ryukyu culture is under threat, and native Ryukyuans face heavy discrimination. Ryukyu Impressionism features vibrant colors, and depicts scenes from the Ryukyu Islands (Okinawa). In contrast to the stillness of photographs or realism, Ryukyu Impressionism utilizes short brush strokes, blurs, and other distortions in order to give a sense of motion to the painting, leaving room for the mind of the viewer to wander, explore, and imagine what might happen next, as if the viewer might look to the left or right and continue to see the scene unfold. Kajiwara is a native Ryukyuan, from Hawaii. Acid free linen canvas (rolled).
