About The Artwork
Sounds of Passersby I depicts converging cultures - the fragmented memories of the African diaspora both blending in and standing out among the multicultural landscape they find themselves in. Masked and unmasked figures wait and wander through a city street, displayed through a lens of a distorted future. The texture of the figures references the long history of painting while the spaces in between meander into the new dark age presented by ever increasingly powerful and pervasive technologies. I chose to show this through a hybrid image that I painted on cardboard, scanned into my computer, and edited digitally with 3D modeling software.
