In The broken David, LFM fantasizes about a conversation with his younger self, hoping to advise himself about the importance of seeking professional help to avoid trauma- projections in the future. The wooden frame painted with sperm and a foetus in one of the versions of Madonna, created by the Norwegian painter Edvard Munch (1863-1944), influenced this piece. Munch described his Madonna as a ‘woman in a state of surrender’. In this composition, LFM introduces sperm cells made of “Band-Aid” to represent the search for a “moment of surrender” through sexual interaction; and perhaps the desire to relive the feeling of wholeness found in the symbiotic relationship between a foetus and his mother. “Dear younger version of myself, Looking triumphant in that Greco-Roman pose in front of the camera? Do you really think that is the way to deal with all this.... Please, don`t boycott yourself and let your subconscious narcissism stand in the way… seek professional help. Believe me: there is no euphoria, attention, achievement or sexual interaction that will fill that void… It took so many years to finally start understanding what you were looking for: to feel complete… to feel whole once again… If you just knew how many projections, decisions, reactions, confrontations, guilt and shame could have been avoided… Young man, there are no short cuts… You will need to face these difficult things hidden inside of you and that we both know about in order to feel free. Free like a curious child who is not afraid of judgements. You know… it was not your fault… Embrace this path towards self-awareness…Accept that you deserve this... It is in your hands. Your future kids will thank you greatly. With love, LFM”
