About The Artwork

Inspired by the story of the the youthful Roman emperor Elagabalus, it was said that; "In a banqueting-room with a reversible ceiling he once buried his guests in violets and other flowers, so that some were actually smothered to death, being unable to crawl out to the top." The most famous depiction of the story is shown in, The Roses of Heliogabalus by Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema. This painting seeks to remove the overtly romantic elements of previous depictions, this painting is almost alive and telling the story woven within the fibres of the canvas itself. Uniquely created, the canvas is painted with the faces of many women then covered in cotton, embroidered and flowers sewn onto the new layer, then gesso applied and painted again in oils, then ripped and sliced the reveal what exists beneath, then sewn and more gesso is applied.
