This work is a part of a series on the subject of intimacy. Exactly what it depicts, what is “immutable” is a mystery even to me, but I recognize there is something profound going on. The Immutable is something sacred, something alive inside us, something that cannot be destroyed, and this work has become more special to me since COVID-19 hit. No matter how the situation has hurt us, each of us in our own way, or made us but fractions of who we once were, there is still something immutable in us that survives, will survive no matter what hardship comes our way. Looking more closely at the image, the Immutable looks like a heart that is glowing, and yet it is not a heart. It is also like a hive or a sexual organ, but it evades those descriptions too. It must remain unnamable, unidentifiable. Just above the Immutable is a more recognizable sexual organ, which suggests penetration or permeability, perhaps that the Immutable withstands penetration. To the right is depicted a masculine figure fleeing the scene. Above the Immutable and the sexual organ is a faded outline of a woman, watching. It is all in a room, for there is dimensionality, but some aspects, such as the masculine figure, defy that dimensionality. There are other abstract body parts as well, all organized in a meaningful way, but that meaning evades reasonable interpretation.
