Cave art from the period 30,000-45,000 years ago marks the point where we can truly say we are dealing with humans as cultured as ourselves. Cave art typically depicted, as here, the animals that were hunted as well as various other objects such as the silhouettes of hands. It had always been assumed that the artists were male but a recent study of the hand silhouettes indicated that the majority were done by females. In this painting I imagine that the females do indeed play a large role in culture in the long prehistory before the rise of agriculture and male-dominated societies. The painting shows two caribou (a real cave painting from Europe) being drawn by a woman who is attended by her two daughters. As she works, the younger daughter is in charge of the fire while the older one, holding a burning brand, practices a magic spell that will permit the men to hunt more successfully. The mother listens, ready to correct her if necessary. The mother uses the charcoal end of a stick from the fire. Later she will apply a reddish ocher pigment to the half-finished caribou to the right.

I am the chair of the Forestry Department at Humboldt State University. Painting is a part of my research program (it sharpens my ability to see nature) as well as my teaching (as I teach others how to see nature). I have published almost 100 refereed papers on a number of topics but primarily the regeneration of trees. Those decades of field experience form the subject matter for the art. Each painting is an attempt to instruct and is accompanied by a description of what is being depicted. In particular, I do not focus on patterns, but rather on the processes that give rise to the patterns.
