The Notorious B.I.G, who shot ya? Artwork

I painted portraits of different rappers in oil throughout 2023. However, for this project, I wanted to use a combination of fluorescent paint and oil colors to create a large portrait of The Notorious B.I.G., who holds a special place in my heart. Tragically, he was shot and killed, and his death remains unsolved by the police. This portrait depicts him as if he's looking out from a classic 1980s photo booth, similar to the ones he might have used himself. The frame encircles the painting, creating the illusion that he's inside the booth, gazing back at the viewer. We, the viewers, become the ones looking into the booth, meeting his gaze – a king adorned with a metallic crown. A year ago, I was also delving deeper into classical painting techniques like grisaille and glazing. This portrait features many layers of paint, similar to the techniques and materials used during the Renaissance period. However, I've incorporated a contemporary twist by using fluorescent acrylic paints and pigments on top of the oil paints. To further enhance the effect, UV-LED strips are hidden within the inner frame, causing the fluorescent paints to radiate. The idea started to take form when I was painting with fluorescent acrylics in 2002, and had to install an external 400W UV lamp to illuminate my whole studio with it to see my paintings in their characteristic state. I wanted to provide my customers a product that comes with the full experience, even if they did not have such a special light source. After recent inventions of the waterproof IP-65 UV-LED strips it became possible to create a dream product with built-in lights. This 3D UV-LED painting comes with an electrical outlet and the mounts for you to hang it on your wall. The LEDs do not consume much electricity and they won’t get overheated. For UK or USA customers I can include custom electric plugs without extra cost.
