One of the most spellbinding and terrifying Aztec pictograms depicts four men vomiting blood while falling to the center of the image, where a skull pulls them into the world of the dead. They are surrounded by four dead deities tied in funeral bundles with banners sitting on thrones: To the left is Xochipilli, the god of flores y cantos, or, as we say today, of poetry and the arts. On the right is Chalchiuhtlicue, the goddess of running water. The upper figure is Mixcoatl, the god of the hunt and the lower figure is an unidentified deity. The twenty black objects at the center are day signs or calendrical figures representing a rabbit, deer, eagle, vulture, alligator, water, flint stone, lizard, skull and other creatures and elements that formed the worldview of the ancient Mexicans. “Again, the combination of very high tech with the most traditional and sacred images.
