About The Artwork

This work is hand formed from recycled paper with embossed design. Areas of the design are burnished to create contrast against matte surface. Currently mounted on archival board in wood gallery frame with museum acrylic. I find inspiration in the natural world and humanity’s relationship to shifting environments. I am intrigued by intricate patterns found in nature, from the growth of cells to molecular structures. These repeating forms often create a false sense of stability and belief that we can fully comprehend and control our environment. My work challenges that perception in the fragmented and imperfect nature of the patterns, which seem at once to be forming and receding, symbolizing change and unpredictability. Utilizing a palette of monochromatic black directs viewers’ attention to the inherent form and pattern within each piece and imparts a sense of gravity to the work, encouraging contemplation. I strive to create forms that appear to be frozen in time, blurring the boundaries between human and geological timescales. The application of graphite as a surface treatment allows me to achieve varying levels of shine and luster, adding depth and highlighting the patterned elements. Additionally, the use of graphite, a form of carbon, functions metaphorically to emphasize the pressing environmental concerns of our era. Using handmade recycled paper allows me to embody both fragility and resilience. By consciously using recycled and biodegradable materials, I am mirroring the impermanence inherent in our environment. I aim to draw attention to the delicate balance between creation and decay, growth and erosion. In my studio practice, I seek to confront my own impact on the environment and grapple with the finite time I have on this planet. My art serves as a visual exploration of the delicate equilibrium between stability and impermanence, encouraging viewers to contemplate their own connection to the ever-changing world around them.
