About The Artwork

” Twelve goddesses, named Cihuateteo, dance around Quetzalcoatl and Stripe Eye, an unidentified male figure ”. Codex Borgia, sheet 39. Digitally enhanced by MM on orange background in February 2022. In the first edition of the photobook Ñundeui I included this image, because I perceived it like a mirror with 12 female spirits dancing gaily around it. Nothing could be further from the truth: The Cihuateteo, who accompanied the Sun on its journey through the sky were women, who died during childbirth and were, like warriors fallen in battle, worshipped as gods. They also were feared for being evil spirits. They seemed candid and innocent, but really were mean and dangerous. Notwithstanding, for the renewed edition I enhanced the image to revive my original impression. I believe in kindness and harmony, but, more than anything, am committed to truth. I celebrate the Aztec worldview and religion for its magic, mystery and exotic sensibility, but reject the brutal imperialism and savage slaughter of prisoners, even if it was considered necessary to keep the Sun and, with it, all creatures on Earth alive. The 50 cm print comes in a limited edition of 9. Title, author and year of manufacture are included on the print. The print comes with a 1 cm white border. Made to order on archival cotton paper in 10 days plus shipping. For open edition inkjet prints in custom size please contact mario.mutschlechner@gmail.com

Shipping & Returns

Delivery Time:Typically 5-7 business days for domestic shipments, 10-14 business days for international shipments.

As an industrial photographer from Cologne, Germany, based since 1967 in Mexico City, I used my craft for decades to document scenes and subjects in sharp, detailed and well lit images. Back in the seventies, when simulating views of other planets, I was looking for a different perception of reality and found it with infrared color film. Today I enjoy a creative freedom similar to that of a painter. With the right combination of photograph and digital manipulation I can create images that are a tribute to imagination and beauty. Starting in 2019 I present on Saatchiart 15 collections as a synopsis of my photography, some digitally remastered and others digitally modified, for sale as archival inkjet prints in different sizes.
