About The Artwork

This artwork is from a series called ‘My Parents Before I Exist’. My parents got married in Iran in 1980, I was born a year later. Thus, looking at some old photos taken during that one year period from their wedding and honeymoon trip makes me feel like a stranger who doesn’t know them at all. Interestingly, I wished I was there and existed since the first day that they had decided to start living together. Using some photographs I found in a family album from that one-year period, I attempt to intentionally introduce my existence by combining hand-stitched embroidery with their photos. The colors of the sewing threads are in contrast with the black and white photographs, which was a technique to connect me with the feeling of the era.
