About The Artwork

I often visit the West Tisbury Dumptique to find object for my art. During a visit last fall, a woman brought a large box of books to donate, but the staff wouldn’t accept them because many of them had been damaged in a flood. The woman trying to donate them was upset because she didn’t want them to end up in the dump. I had a sudden vision of a piece of Found Object Art made of book spines, as most of the flood damage was at the other end of the books. I offered to take them off her hands and brought the books home and began sawing off the damaged parts and cutting out words and phrases from the spines. I then started matching up words and phrases into thoughts that pleased me, and arranging them into a visually appealing pattern as well, essentially a visual and literary prose statement. I decided to end with the phrases “Green for Health - What Colour is your World?” for several reasons; the link between green lifestyles being healthy lifestyles, with the question to the reader/viewer about what ‘colour’ they see their world in. This is especially relevant as the book “What Colour is your World?” was originally published in the 1960’s and was a book I loved as a child, teaching children to embrace their unique ‘colours’; i.e. that it is ok to be ‘different’.

David Joseph is an artist, physician, engineer and inventor who lives on Martha’s Vineyard and in Naples, Florida. As an artist, David’s primary media are found object art and photography. An avid international traveler, he has visited over 120 countries on all seven continents, all 50 states, and over 250 UNESCO world heritage sites, each destination an opportunity to photograph nature, wildlife, and portraits. Unable to travel during Covid, David saw the potential to create art from the mundanity around him. He began to create found object sculptures made of old or used common household items, toys, and sports equipment. Each whimsical, thought-provoking piece displays the balanced composition of a trained artist and the skilled construction of an engineer.
