About The Artwork

This piece uses a combination of wood and metal. The woods used are mahogany, walnut, bloodwood, birds eye maple, rosewood, canary wood, spalted tamarind, and jobillo. Basswood is used as an inlay. The color is printed on metal from an original acrylic piece of mine. The piece is mounted in 3D fashion on a white gatorboard and placed in a white wooden floater frame. My artwork is made up of exotic woods, acrylic paints and metal. I first make sketches of an idea then cut out patterns representing each component, deciding what each part will be color and which will be wood. Once a final composition is decided upon, I begin selecting the parts. For wood I use Rosewood, walnut, Mahogany, birds eye maple, bloodwood, cherry, spalted tamarind and jobillo. Not all of these are in every piece, but a combination is used. Most are 1/8 in thick. Each has several coats of a hand rubbed finish. The color is taken from acrylic paint applied to a acid free paper and mounted on a thicker gatorboard. Sometimes the color is inlayed into the wood. Once the individual pieces are complete they are assembled on a hard gatorboard and placed in a floater frame. I have a series where a hand made banana paper is used in the mounting process. During assembly the pieces are separated from each other by a small unseen gatorboard, giving a wonderful 3D effect. This is difficult to see in the photographs. As you can see, this is a very complicated, time-consuming process. I have recently begun a new process of photographing the original acrylic paint parts of the art and printing them on metal. There is no way to achieve such amazing colors using conventional painting methods.

I was born in Winchester, TN on August 20, 1937. I have lived in the eastern states of New York, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, and most of the southern states. Following my years of Education and teaching, my wife and I founded The American Woodworker magazine in 1984. We published the magazine for three years before selling to Rodale Press in 1988. My love of photography spans over 60 years. It began with a 4 X 5 camera in my teens. As I have passed 80 years of age, I have opted for the lighter 35 mm. In 1984 I had the privilege of spending a week aboard the USS Independence photographing the launch and retrieval of US fighter aircraft. At the same time, I was able to photograph such people as Ray Charles, Kenny Rogers, Brooke Shields, Vanessa Williams, and the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders, along with a host of other well-known celebrities who were abord filming the TV special "A Salute To Lady Liberty". Landscape photography is my main interest and has won many awards, including local, state and national venues. My interest in mixed media efforts have been directed toward the study and use of acrylic paints, along with exotic woods and metals. I have studied at public and private colleges and have taken workshops and seminars with nationally known artists in this field. Combining these areas has given me the opportunity to produce art that is new and unique. All my work, including photography, framing, abstract and design is done by me in-house. I use many different processes involving rice paper, cast paper, canvas, watercolor, exotic woods and metals to produce abstract wall art. All designs are original. It is my intention to use the best quality material to produce artwork that is unique and is a good value for the collector.
