About The Artwork

“Women in space: Samantha Cristoforetti on the ISS” Courtesy NASA photo 2022. Digital painting by MM. In Sept. 2022 Samantha was named mission commander. On her second mission of 6 months aboard the ISS her experience, efficiency and unassuming personality were honored by ESA, NASA and Roscosmos authorities. The ISS crews execute experiments in microgravity designed by the International Scientific Community. On this NASA photo from August 10, 2022 the Italian astronaut is floating on the ceiling of the Columbus laboratory engulfed by a maze of cables and equipment. Year after year the ISS crews lay the groundwork for a better cooperation with the natural world and for planetary exploration. Some are women, who train for years and live for 6 months in the ascetic environment of the ISS. The ISS is their home and the crew is their family. On orbit they live a monastic life. No creature comforts, as they say at NASA. All they do is work: station maintenance and experiments in virtual contact with the corresponding scientists. Enclosed in steel cylinders they never feel sunshine, rain, wind or snow, never enjoy the smell of a forest, a meadow of flowers, the change of the seasons or the joyful play of children on a Sunday afternoon. After work their main leisure activity is to see the Earth falling away beneath them, a continually changing spectacle of cosmic beauty. Also, a reminder of the uniqueness and fragility of life on our blue dot in the vastness of space. People like Samantha are to be admired. They sacrifice everything to be in space and to contribute to the advancement of science and the peaceful exploration of the Solar System. The 56 cm print comes in a limited edition of 9. Title, author and year of manufacture are included on the print. The print comes with a 2 cm white border. Made to order on archival cotton paper in 10 days plus shipping. As an industrial photographer from Cologne, Germany, based since 1967 in Mexico City, I used my craft for decades to document scenes and subjects in sharp, detailed and well lit images. Back in the seventies, when simulating views of other planets, I was looking for a different perception of reality and found it with infrared color film. Today I enjoy a creative freedom similar to that of a painter. With the right combination of photograph and digital manipulation I can create images that are a tribute to imagination and beauty. Starting in 2019 I present on Saatchiart 15 collections as a synopsis of my photography, some digitally remastered and others digitally modified, for sale as archival inkjet prints in different sizes.
