“Xochipilli the god of poetry and the arts” Codex Laud, sheet 16. Digitally enhanced by MM on brown background in 2021. Xochipilli is the prince of “flor y canto” or, as we say today, of poetry and the arts. He is the source of inspiration and imagination, the god of creativity protecting us from the futility and loneliness of our existence. I approached him with reverence awed by his magic and mystery. I tried to celebrate him as the ancient Tlacuilo imagined him: surrounded by flowers, a hummingbird, the great alligator, monster of the Earth, and by an onslaught of colors signaling the beauty and diversity of life. It took days until I found the right combination of colors, textures and depth. I made four versions on white, brown, orange and plum blue backgrounds. I don’t know which one might be best. Normally I try to explain my pictures. In this case I have no explanation. Xochipilli is all magic and mystery. The 50 cm print comes in a limited edition of 9. Title, author and year of manufacture are included on the print. The print comes with a 1 cm white border. Made to order on archival cotton paper in 10 days plus shipping.
