About The Artwork

On May 4, 2019 the performer wanted to materialize his lifelong dream of being an all knowing yogi/saint/mystic with an aura of having all the answers of mankind as passersby pass by and thus stationed himself at the corner of Knott Ave. and Orange at Anaheim with the shown sign. Contrary to his expectations the public interest was sparse and those who did ask questions seemingly bothered him with mundane pleasantries. Most asked questions were either: "How are you?" or "How was your day?" which pleasantly surprised him since he prepared with the mindset of being ambushed and surprised with arcane obscurantism of world knowledge-base. Out of 40 or so encounters, some of the questions were: "What is the temperature?" (which he guessed correctly to be 68 degrees), "What is the square root of 7?", "Why don't you go and get a job?", "What came first chicken or egg?", "What do you think of communism?", "Are you gay", "Do humans have free will?" - the last which led to an almost hour long discussion with a student interested in theology. Just like the chicken and the egg conundrum, the performer quickly realized that questions such as "What shall I give my mother for Mother's Day?" cannot be googled, some ambiguous and others tricky such as even though he came with "John Wilkes Booth" for "Who killed JFK?" he realized it soon whittles down and branches to matter of opinions and debate. Notwithstanding the nature of vagueness in a question such as "How does money work?" or prescient ones "How will be my day tomorrow?", the fact that neither could be looked up in an encyclopedia or a tome was also a testament of limits of human knowledge. The performer continued this social experiment from May 4, 2019 to May 12, 2019 and one on May 18, 2019 and a final one in a clown mask which resulted in only a single question. He documented the questions upon returning home. He was heavily influenced by siddhis of yogis, miracle workers as well as a scene from the Fox TV Show John Doe and his idol, David Blaine. Although he would describe the "correct hits" as sudden surge of "dopamine rush", the fact that humans wanted to connect with another, and just get to know someone in a modern day and age of internet and technology, where anyone can be omniscient at the flick of a button, was heartwarming and assuring of human compassion. His wry and fun moments were when people gave dubious looks of double take as he flipped the stage on the actor of a homeless man himself, who instead of being needful and nuisance to the public, demanded no attention unless "you walk to [his] doorstop". This original item is now on display for sale. As a gift, the artist will gladly frame and bear the shipping cost should the buyer agree on a purchase.

Born in Bangladesh on October 18, 1983, Zeeshan Mahmud is the only son of Mir Shahabuddin Mohammad and Hasina Banu. He attended Fairmount Avenue Elementary School in Philadelphia where his father was completing Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship Program before moving back home. At Dhaka, he attended Scholastica for a while before travelling to Pretoria. There his father held a post of Economic Counselor as a diplomat. In South Africa he attended the prestigious Pretoria Boys High School. He would find himself traveling again, this time to Orange County where he would graduate from Garden Grove High School and attend Orange Coast College on and off before dropping out of Cypress College in 2016. Flamboyant but shy, he once dressed up in Uncle Sam costume during an exam in his political science class at Orange Coast College to a pin-drop audience who were not least bit amused. He has an eclectic taste in nearly everything from bird-watching to Eastern philosophy but his major obsession is Bangladesh cricket team. He can recite pi to 100 digits!
