I painted this slice of cake from life at Dynamo Donut in San Francisco's Mission District. I've been painting portraits of artful cuisine since Spring 2015. This pastry series is inspired by paintings by my art professor from UC Davis, Wayne Thiebaud. I used to be a courtroom artist, so, unlike Wayne Thiebaud's, my work is journalistic in nature; I paint the object in front of me from life, exactly as I see it. As an artist using computers since 1982 to paint with light, pixels are a part of my work. I painted this in the ArtRage app as 1536 x 2048 pixels. I have increased the resolution to 3000 x 4000 pixels for printing. You may see pixels. As building blocks of digital paintings, they are an intrinsic part of my art.

David Newman is a classically trained American artist and designer with more than 40 years of professional experience in fine and graphic art. His works range from portraits of Silicon Valley luminaries, to mouthwatering representations of cuisine, and powerful poster art. He paints subjects directly from life and is dedicated to capturing the delicate nuance of people and objects that make each visual experience unique. He has been Artist-in-Residence for HackDay at the The New York Times HQ, Founder Labs, Startup Weekends in SF & NYC, GTUG at Google, Le Camping in Paris, iOSDevCamp at PayPal HQ, and AngularU in Burlingame. As a freelance courtroom artist (for UPI & others), he covered historic trials, including the trial of Dan White and Black Panther Party founder Huey Newton in the 1970's. He has painted with computer graphics systems, including Mac, since the early 1980's where he taught computer graphics to artists and designers in NYC. At Chirp, the first Twitter developer conference held shortly after the iPad came out in April 2010, Newman put aside his traditional paper and ink brushes and began using iPad to document high tech innovators in Silicon Valley. His work has been featured in NYTimes.com, MacToday, Taiwan; Konkret & MobilNext, Germany, Gentry, Silicon Valley, and numerous online articles.
