Engin Hassan is a digital artists who predominantly uses photographs as the basis of the images he creates. Born in Hackney, London he’s always been immersed in the creative process in one form or another. Originally involved in music and the London electronic music scene ( from the early 1990’s till present time ) he was involved in providing music for the chill out rooms at parties across south London. It was here he chanced across sample pioneers, London based music act Coldcut. He has worked for them on and off since then helping them create their archive of sound samples and loops. He also creates his own ambient and experimental music and dj mixes. It wasn’t till much later that Engin discovered the inner artist. In 2016 his sister-in-law Siobhan Wall was curating an exhibition in Amsterdam called ‘Drawing Work’. She approached Engin about a series of sketches he did on post-it notes when he worked in a call centre in London in the early 1990’s. The pieces were featured in the exhibition. After the exhibition Engin picked up an iPad to see if he still had a connection and has been creating ever since. His pieces usually start with a single image or photograph he might have taken as the inspiration. From this point layers are added, be they layers of colour or other images which he uses to add texture and depth to a piece. His style has slowly evolved and inspiration can come from anywhere, be it an object he stumbles across in the street or an inspiring city!.
