About The Artwork

A favela (Portuguese pronunciation: [fɐˈvɛlɐ]), Brazilian Portuguese for slum, is a low-income historically informal urban area in Brazil. The first favela, now known as Providência in the center of Rio de Janeiro, appeared in the late 19th century, built by soldiers who had nowhere to live following the Canudos War. Some of the first settlements were called bairros africanos (African neighborhoods). Over the years, many former enslaved Africans moved in. Even before the first favela came into being, poor citizens were pushed away from the city and forced to live in the far suburbs. However, most modern favelas appeared in the 1970s due to rural exodus, when many people left rural areas of Brazil and moved to cities. Unable to find places to live, many people found themselves in favelas. Census data released in December 2011 by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) showed that in 2010, about 6 percent of the Brazilian population lived in slums. Aside crime, drugs and poverty renowned with Favelas there are projects to enlighten them with bright colors. After all there are unfortunate people living there. The Favelas seem to have their own dynamics. They have an internal logic on what is acceptable psychically and so you don't block neighbors light or else... They are just like other tropical vegetation that is trying to catch resources again other parts of the jungle, and it sure is a jungle...there are beautiful creatures in a jungle and at second glance one makes sense that the jungle is a Favela and the Favela is the man made jungle.Looking at this piece, you may feel contradicting feelings about it; is beautiful and ugly, it's happy but sad...its good and its bad...you want to see it closely but not really..the work of lines going everywhere and criss-crossed by black power lines resembles freedom but then the outside world comes and ruins this seemingly intricate, internal well being self sufficient life. The world collide of lines of colors they are bright but seem dark...a good light will certainly show you that its actually rich as well as the Favela life is....
