About The Artwork

This image is from a body of work called 'The Digital Toolbox" Painting in the Age of Technology' It reflects the feeling I had as a young child immigrating to Canada in the 1950's. It seemed every home I went into had a flight of plaster geese lined up the wall and every friend had a father who hunted or fished. It was overwhelming having come from tamed fields of green and forest to this vast country of wild landscapes. I approached the imagery as a young child would, seeing bright colours and fantastical birds clothed in their own glory. I wanted to use the computer to reflect how far we've come from the hands on experience of nature but also as an extension of the great hopes society had in the 50's of the coming space age where machines would do all our work for us and we would have extended leisure time as a result. I hope the viewer will respond to the landscape as something alive and vibrant with distinct expressions of its own glory.

I have deliberately chosen the road less traveled in life. For five years in my early 20’s I lived ‘off the grid’ in a small one room cabin at the end of a half mile trail shared with bears and cougars. I had no running water, hydro or telephone and didn’t drive. This was a challenge when I also had two children under the age of five. However, it taught me a lot about nature, silence, adversity and the resiliency of the human spirit. For the last 37 years I have lived on a remote island off the coast of British Columbia Canada. This quiet oasis allows me to be silent and let the land speak.
