About The Artwork

Original signed printed on archival Hahnemühle William Turner 310g paper. "Le hazard fait bien les choses" translates as "as chance would have it". Imagine you are standing above a sheet of "electric blue" paper. You hold in your hands 10,000 very thin strips of yellow, red and purple paper. You open your hands and let the paper strips drop on the sheet... For me this example illustrates the fact that sheer randomness is uninteresting. Before you achieve an interesting composition you will have to try this many times. This is because random harmony arrises only when chance is somewhat governed. Thanks to the Atelier Aléatoire, not only did I avoid you the painstaking task of cutting the strips but also to arrange them in a neat yet slightly irregular pattern.

Thibaut researches how to control random feeds of numbers to create meaningful abstract compositions. With the Atelier Aléatoire, he adds a new dimension to this body of work: introducing an interactive questionnaire to compose soul portraits of collectors and passer-by, at a specific moment, imprinting in it the very mood of its epoch. For the Paris Book Fair (Livre Paris) in 2017 he presented an installation with a large format printer where he invited 80 visitors to draw their portraits. In Bangkok (2011,2015) he explored materials like fabric, glass, wood, and metal for his prints and light sculptures. He created a labyrinth of lights for Architect 2013 and the “ Ambulatory of the 5 Eléments” in a lounge designed by Christian Lacroix. A retrospective of his research was held at RCAC. He was a resident artist and lecturer at the Chulalongkorn University. Thibaut now lives in Prague.
